In July 2024, the Tour & Travel Business Study Program (Bisnis Perjalanan Wisata) at the Vocational School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a market validation trial for live-in tour packages in Grogol Tourism Village. This event took place on July 5-6, 2024, in collaboration with UGM’s International Affairs Office. The program involved ten international students from various countries, including Tanzania, Cambodia, East Timor, the Philippines, Colombia, Rwanda, and Gambia.
During their stay, the international students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture and community life through various activities. They engaged in traditional games like dakon, learned how to make traditional tempeh, watched a wayang kulit performance, and enjoyed breakfast in the rice fields featuring Gunungkidul’s signature dish, Sega Berkat. This initiative not only provided a unique experience for the students but also supported the market validation efforts for the live-in tour packages in Grogol Tourism Village.
The international students expressed their appreciation for the beauty and warmth of the rural atmosphere in Grogol. However, they noted that the one-day stay felt insufficient to explore all aspects of village life. They provided constructive feedback, particularly regarding the need to improve homestay standards and the accessibility of roads leading to the village.
The program aimed to promote economic development in the region by attracting more tourists and enhancing local businesses. By involving international students, UGM hopes to create a bridge between cultures and foster a deeper understanding of the local community’s way of life. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting sustainable economic growth and fostering inclusive communities.
The feedback from the students will be invaluable in refining the live-in tour packages. Their insights will help local stakeholders understand the expectations of international tourists and improve the overall experience. This collaborative effort between UGM and the Grogol community is a step towards creating a sustainable tourism model that benefits both visitors and residents.
Moreover, the program highlights the importance of cultural exchange in tourism. By allowing international students to experience the local culture firsthand, the initiative promotes mutual respect and understanding. This cultural immersion is essential for building a sustainable tourism industry that respects and preserves local traditions while providing economic opportunities for the community.
As the Grogol Tourism Village continues to develop its tourism offerings, the insights gained from this market validation trial will play a crucial role in shaping future initiatives. The goal is to create a vibrant tourism ecosystem that not only attracts visitors but also empowers the local community economically and culturally.
In conclusion, the market validation of live-in tour packages in Grogol Tourism Village represents a significant step towards sustainable tourism development. By focusing on economic development, cultural exchange, and community engagement, UGM and the local stakeholders are paving the way for a brighter future for both the village and its visitors.
