Research led by Arina Pramusita and Frida Anis Handayani from UGM’s Travel Business Program studied Gen Z’s interest in Kotagede. Supported by students, the study explored attractions appealing to younger generations. A key highlight of this research was an interview with Mr. Joko, the founder of Lawang Pethuk, who integrates cultural preservation and environmental development with tourism, creating a positive social and economic impact for Kotagede.

Lawang Pethuk plays a vital role in realizing several SDG targets. Empowering local communities (SDG 1: No Poverty) is a primary focus through skills training in crafts and culinary arts, helping to improve residents’ income and quality of life. Cultural and environmental preservation (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities) is another priority, supporting sustainable practices in crafts and tourism.

Moreover, the community boosts the local economy by facilitating local products (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth), attracting tourists interested in unique local cultures. Lawang Pethuk also contributes to increasing public awareness (SDG 4: Quality Education) by hosting educational programs on cultural preservation and sustainable practices.

The tangible impacts of tourism development in Kotagede include increased tourist visits, job creation, and the enhancement of local infrastructure. These initiatives not only strengthen the local economy but also support the preservation of cultural heritage and natural resources for future generations.

Lawang Pethuk demonstrates that tourism can serve as a key pillar of sustainable development, providing broad benefits for both the local community and the environment. This initiative serves as an inspiring example for other communities to create inclusive, sustainable, and competitive tourist destinations in line with the SDGs.
