UGM Hosts 2024 National Seminar on Applied Technology: Shaping Indonesia’s Future Through Vocational Education and Applied Technology

Yogyakarta, October 19, 2024 – The Vocational School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) proudly held the National Seminar on Applied Technology (SNTT) 2024 with the theme “Strengthening Comprehensive Vocational Higher Education as a Pillar of Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045.” The event took place on October 19, 2024, at the Teaching Industry Learning Center (TILC) of UGM’s Vocational School in Yogyakarta. This seminar is expected to serve as a platform for academics, practitioners, and stakeholders to share innovations and ideas in strengthening vocational education and applied technology to support Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045.

In his report, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Wiryanta, M.T., Deputy Dean for Research and Community Service at UGM’s Vocational School, announced that SNTT 2024 featured 86 articles from the science and technology cluster, 69 articles from the social sciences cluster, 10 articles from the health cluster, and 18 papers from the agro cluster. The seminar attracted participation not only from UGM’s faculty and students but also from 16 other external institutions.

The Dean of UGM’s Vocational School, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ir. Agus Maryono, IPM, ASEAN Eng., expressed pride in the seminar’s ability to gather researchers from 17 institutions, which has great potential for interdisciplinary collaboration in various forms. “UGM’s Vocational School has a motto: strong theory, excellent practice, and precise solutions. Therefore, we need to synergize to provide the right solutions,” he stated.

During the keynote speech, Saryadi, S.T., M.B.A. (Secretary of the Directorate General of Vocational Education in Indonesia) delivered a presentation titled “Strengthening Comprehensive Vocational Higher Education as a Pillar of Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045.” This presentation delved deeper into how robust and comprehensive vocational education can be a key pillar in shaping Indonesia’s superior generation by 2045.

The event continued with a panel session moderated by Dr. Silvi Nur Oktalina, S.Hut., M.Si., guiding a thematic discussion on the transformation of vocational education in the modern era and its relevance to industrial development. The panel featured two invited speakers: Dr. Muhammad Aditya Warman, S.Psi., M.B.A., who presented on “Transforming Vocational Education Models in the Era of Industry 4.0 and 5.0,” discussing how vocational education can adapt to rapid changes in the digital age and the industrial revolution, as well as the strategic role of education in producing a globally competitive workforce; and Ali Ridho Barakbah, S.Kom., Ph.D. (Director of the State Polytechnic of Surabaya), who presented on “Developing Comprehensive Vocational Higher Education,” exploring strategies for holistic vocational education development aligned with the needs of the business and industrial world.

SNTT 2024 was divided into four main clusters: Science and Technology, which includes fields such as industry, transportation and logistics, materials and energy, and computer science; Socio-Humanities, focusing on applied linguistics, arts and culture, tourism, archiving and information, economics and management, accounting, and education; Health, discussing innovations in midwifery, nursing, medicine, medical records, and other health fields; and Agro, focusing on agriculture and forestry, livestock and animal health, and agricultural product processing.

The focus of the National Seminar on Applied Technology 2024 in the Science and Technology cluster was directed towards the latest developments in applied technology that can be implemented in the industrial sector and scientific research. The focus on the socio-humanities cluster was directed towards social, cultural, and economic issues related to the development of vocational education and its application in society. The health cluster focused on innovations in health supported by applied technology to improve health services and community welfare. Meanwhile, the agro and environmental cluster focused on applied technology in agriculture, livestock, forestry, and agricultural product processing to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia’s agro sector. Following the panel discussion, parallel presentations of research papers from SNTT 2024 were held.
