Fablabs Jogja, as a digital fabrication laboratory, was established to inspire communities and entrepreneurs to share and transform their ideas into new products and prototypes by providing access to a wide range of advanced digital manufacturing technologies. Fablab Jogja was initiated through the “Project for Enhancing the U-I-G-C Approach Through Promotion of Open Innovation by Creating an Enabling Environment at FRC-UGM,” supported by UGM and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). This program was developed to support the concept of “Jogja Open Innovation for Community Enhancement” (JOICE) through strengthening the capacity of FRC-UGM in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta.

Digital fabrication is a design and manufacturing workflow where digital data directly drives manufacturing equipment to form various part geometries. This data most often comes from CAD (computer-aided design), which is then transferred to CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software. The output of CAM software is data that directs a specific additive and subtractive manufacturing tool, such as a 3D printer or CNC milling machine.
