The decision to eliminate plastic and cardboard from meeting consumables is part of a broader commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly focusing on responsible consumption and efficient use of resources.

For snacks during meetings, the school has used a buffet-style service or the use of reusable food containers and bamboo baskets. This approach not only reduces waste but also promotes a culture of sustainability among faculty members. The use of bamboo, a renewable resource, further emphasizes the school’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

When it comes to lunch, the same principles apply. Meals will be served buffet-style or in reusable lunch box or bamboo baskets, ensuring that no single-use plastics or cardboard are involved in the process. This shift is expected to significantly reduce the amount of waste generated during meetings, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

While not all food vendors have been able to accommodate these new requirements, SV UGM is actively working with suppliers to ensure that they can meet these sustainability standards. The school recognizes the importance of collaboration with local businesses to foster a more sustainable food supply chain.

The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from faculty members, who appreciate the  efforts to combat plastic waste. Many have expressed their support for the move, recognizing the urgent need to address environmental issues in Yogyakarta. As SV UGM continues to implement these changes, it hopes to inspire other institutions to follow suit. By prioritizing sustainable practices in their operations, educational institutions can play a crucial role in promoting environmental stewardship and responsible consumption.

SV UGM’s commitment to reducing plastic and cardboard waste is a step towards a more sustainable future. As SV UGM leads by example, it encourages everyone in the community to reflect on their consumption habits and consider how they can contribute to a healthier planet.
