Globalization presents a formidable challenge to the preservation of cultural heritage, especially intangible cultural heritage such as traditional knowledge, arts, languages, and rituals passed down through generations. The research aims to explore how these elements can be safeguarded while still engaging with the global community.

Urbanization and modernization pose additional challenges for major cities, including Jakarta, Solo, Yogyakarta, and Gianyar, where the development of traditional arts often struggles to find its place amidst contemporary art movements. The study will investigate how urban environments can better accommodate and promote traditional arts, ensuring they thrive alongside modern expressions.

Community involvement is crucial in the preservation of culture. The research emphasizes the importance of public participation, not only as spectators but also as active participants in the management and promotion of cultural heritage. Engaging the community in these processes can foster a deeper connection to their cultural roots and encourage the transmission of knowledge to future generations.

However, there are growing concerns about the commodification of culture. Excessive commercialization of cultural heritage can undermine its authenticity and sever the connection between the heritage and its originating community. The study will address these concerns, seeking to find a balance between cultural expression and economic viability.

Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta serves as an ideal venue for this research, providing a space where artists and community members can come together to share their experiences and insights. The initiative aims to create a dialogue that respects and honors traditional practices while also embracing the influences of globalization.

As the study progresses, UGM researchers will collaborate with staff members of Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta to gather data and insights. This collaborative approach will help to identify best practices for fostering inclusivity and preserving cultural heritage in the face of globalization.

Ultimately, the goal of this research is to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting inclusive cities and communities that celebrate cultural heritage. By building inclusive dialogue spaces, UGM hopes to inspire a new generation of artists and cultural practitioners who can navigate the complexities of globalization while remaining rooted in their cultural identities.
