This public lecture featured Prof. Dr. Ramlee B. Mustapha, Former President of the Asian Academic Society of Vocational Education and Training (AASVET), who has extensive experience in global scientific publications. The event was attended by students of the Applied English Study Program and lecturers from SV UGM who were enthusiastic about deepening their skills in high-quality academic writing.

In his presentation, Prof. Ramlee explained that the process of writing for scientific publication is not merely a technical skill, but also the courage to convey ideas that are relevant, different, and have added value. “Like a black swan among white swans, we must produce publications that are strong and different from others in order to be worthy of publication in reputable journals,” he said, motivating the participants.

He also emphasized the importance of choosing unique topics, writing with a neat structure, and following scientific writing rules. In addition, students were encouraged to learn strategies to make their articles more likely to be accepted by international journals, such as choosing the right keywords and writing titles that attract the attention of editors.

The question and answer session was interactive. Students enthusiastically asked questions, one of which was about Prof. Ramlee’s habit of reading 30 books to support his publications. They asked whether all the books had to be read in full or if it was sufficient to read certain sections. In response, Prof. Ramlee advised students to focus on sections relevant to their research and not to hesitate to utilize technology. “Use AI wisely to assist in the reading process but make sure you use it well,” he advised.

Through this activity, SV UGM hopes to create an academic environment that encourages a culture of writing and research among students. It is hoped that the knowledge gained will not only improve the quality of final projects, but also open up opportunities for international publication, which will add value to academic and professional career development.
