The public lecture featured Prof. Ramlee Mustapha, Former President of the Asian Academic Society of Vocational Education and Training (AASVET), as the keynote speaker. The session was moderated by Alfelia Nugky Permatasari, S.S., M.A., lecturer at Sekolah Vokasi UGM.

In his presentation, Prof. Ramlee emphasized the importance of understanding students’ perceptions of the learning process. According to him, the current generation tends to understand material more easily through visual media than text alone. Therefore, the pedagogical approach in vocational education needs to adapt to these needs.

Regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning, Prof. Ramlee emphasized that it is impossible to prohibit students from using this technology. “Innovation is more important than AI,” he said, stressing that the main goal of teaching is not to restrict, but to guide students to be able to innovate by utilizing AI wisely.

After the presentation, the event continued with a discussion and question-and-answer session with the participants. During this session, several participants asked questions, one of which was about what strategies lecturers could use to ensure that students’ use of AI did not reduce creativity in the learning process. Prof. Ramlee responded by emphasizing the need for a pedagogical approach that balances the use of technology with innovation-based assignments, so that students are still encouraged to think critically and creatively.

Kuliah umum ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya wawasan para dosen dan guru di Indonesia dalam merancang metode pengajaran yang lebih relevan dengan perkembangan teknologi.

Yogyakarta, August 19, 2025 – Sekolah Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) collaborated with Yogyakarta State University (UNY) to hold a book review event for River Restoration by Prof. Dr.-Ing. SV UGM x UNY Gelar Bedah Buku “Restorasi Sungai” Karya Prof. Agus Maryono: Dorong Gerakan Sungai Lestari
SV UGM x UNY Hold Book Review of “River Restoration” by Prof. Agus Maryono: Encouraging the Sustainable River Movement

In his speech, Prof. Agus Maryono, Dean of Sekolah Vokasi UGM and author of the book Restorasi Sungai (River Restoration), emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration to restore the natural functions of rivers.

“River restoration is not only about infrastructure, but also about reviving the ecosystem. We hope that rivers can once again become a habitat for fish, a sustainable source of water, and even have the potential to be developed as eco-tourism destinations,” he said.

Kepala Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai (BBWS) Serayu Opak, Maryadi Utama, S.T., M.Si., turut memberikan dukungan terhadap gerakan ini.
The Head of the Serayu Opak River Basin Agency (BBWS), Maryadi Utama, S.T., M.Si., also lent his support to this movement.

“River restoration requires drivers and motivation from all levels of society. River-conscious communities can be the key, for example through community service activities, river festivals, and the development of educational tourism. In this way, the community will be more connected to the river while also preserving it,” he explained.

The discussion highlighted the urgency of the Indonesian River Restoration Movement. This movement was born out of concern for the increasingly degraded condition of rivers due to pollution and excessive exploitation. River restoration is carried out to restore water quality, ecological functions, and harmonious relationships between communities and their environment.

Prof. Agus added that this movement stems from a simple principle: love for rivers.

“This movement began with a sense of love, which was first manifested through concrete action on the Code River. From there, the spirit can spread to other rivers. The method is simple: visit the river, study it, then protect it. This can take the form of community service, environmentally friendly drainage arrangements, and the application of the principles of ‘collecting, absorbing, and flowing to maintain the balance of the ecosystem,’” he said.

This event is expected to be an important milestone in strengthening the synergy between universities, the government, and river care communities. With continued collaboration, river restoration will not only restore ecosystems, but also contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to clean water, sustainable settlements, and terrestrial ecosystem protection.

During the discussion session, DLIKES SV UGM presented various achievements and learning development strategies. One of them was the successful establishment of an association in the field of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) with other universities as a forum for academic and professional collaboration. Cooperation was also built through community service programs with partners, including involvement as resource persons in activities held by partners.

In addition, interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the focuses of SV UGM, which regularly holds partner gatherings every year. These activities not only serve to maintain good relationships, but also provide updates on the latest technology to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant. The learning strategy at SV UGM is structured, beginning with strengthening core competencies in the first to fifth semesters, then providing room for exploration in the following semesters through industrial internships and student exchanges. Field Work Practice (PKL) is utilized as an introduction to the world of work in industry before students enter full internships in their final semester.

The visit took place in a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. The exchange of ideas is expected to be the first step towards more intensive collaboration in the future. The event ended with the presentation of souvenirs and a group photo session as a symbol of friendship and the commitment of both institutions to continue working together for the advancement of vocational education in Indonesia.
