UGM Public Relations Capacity Building Workshop 2025: Strengthening Communication Strategies and Crisis Management

Yogyakarta, July 30, 2025 – Sekolah Vokasi Gadjah Mada University (SV UGM) held the 2025 SV UGM Public Relations Capacity Building Workshop as a way to strengthen the role of public relations in facing communication challenges in the digital age. Held in Room 204, 2nd Floor, Teaching Industry Learning Center (TILC) Building, this activity involved public relations leaders and managers from departments and study programs within SV UGM, as well as staff from the UGM central office.

Dr. Wiryanta, S.T., M.T., selaku Wakil Dekan Bidang Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat.
Dr. Wiryanta, S.T., M.T., as Vice Dean for Research and Community Service.

The event was officially opened by Dr. Wiryanta, S.T., M.T., as Vice Dean for Research and Community Service. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of building adaptive public relations skills and carefully reading public communication situations.

“The truth today is no longer a matter of substance, but of perception. In the world of social media, right and wrong are often determined by how we package information. As readers and communicators, we must be observant in interpreting information,” he said.

Furthermore, he explained that this activity was a response to a special request from the UGM PR office, which emphasized the importance of preparedness in facing organizational crises. “We hope that our colleagues, as the spearhead of vocational public relations, will be able to position themselves appropriately, both personally and institutionally, in facing crises that may arise in our environment,” he added.

Winda Mizwar Pratiwi, S.E., M.I.Kom., seorang founder, business owner, konsultan komunikasi strategis, praktisi komunikasi pemasaran, sekaligus dosen.

The main material in this workshop was presented by Winda Mizwar Pratiwi, S.E., M.I.Kom., a founder, business owner, strategic communications consultant, marketing communications practitioner, and lecturer. With a multidisciplinary background and extensive experience in public communications, she presented material entitled “Crisis Management and Proactive Communications.”

In her presentation, she emphasized that handling organizational crises is not only a matter of quick response, but also of building empathy, creating the right narrative, and ensuring systemic readiness in facing public dynamics. “The key to weathering a storm of issues is the ability to see, hear, calm, connect, protect, and give hope. This is not just a technical step, but an effort to build trust amid tension,” she explained.

She also introduced the “organizational senses” approach as a form of institutional sensitivity to potential crises. This concept involves the role of the “public eye” in monitoring social media, “social ears” to capture unrest, “organizational skin” to feel the emotional temperature, “issue nose” to detect small sparks of gossip, and “conscience” to gauge responses.

“We must learn to read crisis signals before they become a big wave, and that can only be done if we are sensitive to the communication landscape,” she said.

As part of the hands-on training, workshop participants took part in a crisis simulation titled “Vocational Under Pressure.” In this session, participants were divided into four teams to conduct a simulated press conference and practice question and answer sessions with the media and police. In this session, participants were trained to convey institutional messages calmly and purposefully. “When arguing, position yourself as an organization, not as an individual. This is important to maintain the integrity of the institution. Emotional awareness and understanding of how audiences receive information are key to shaping public narratives,” explained Winda.

During the discussion and question-and-answer session, steps to clarify issues that arise in the public sphere were also discussed. One important conclusion that emerged was that not all issues need to be responded to quickly; rather, their urgency must first be analyzed. If an issue is no longer relevant (expired), then documenting the case becomes a strategic step to mitigate similar risks in the future.

Through this workshop, Sekolah Vokasi UGM hopes that public relations will not only function as a spokesperson, but also as the front line in building trust, maintaining reputation, and developing measurable communication strategies based on values of integrity.

SV UGM Research Examines Storytelling Strategies in Instagram Reels of Three Multinational Brands

Yogyakarta, July 17 — A research team consisting of lecturers and students from the English Applied Bachelor Program at Sekolah Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada is currently examining storytelling strategies used in public relations campaigns by three multinational brands in Indonesia through Instagram Reels. The study aims to explore how linguistic elements are employed to shape brand image and build emotional engagement with social media audiences.

Ilustrasi analisis konten Instagram Reels dari merek-merek ternama seperti Traveloka, Google, dan L'Oréal.

The research focuses on three brands representing different industries: @traveloka.id (tourism), @google.indonesia (technology), and @lorealindonesia (beauty). Data is collected from Indonesian-language Instagram Reels that feature English code-mixing, reflecting the current communication style of Indonesian youth.

In its progress report phase, the research team has successfully collected and transcribed 33 Reels from the three official accounts. Preliminary findings reveal that all brands consistently utilize emotionally charged, inclusive, and persuasive lexical choices in their storytelling narratives. The study also identifies the use of complex sentence structures, rhetorical questions, and direct calls to action that enhance the communicative appeal of the brands.

“This research combines three descriptive and interpretative analytical approaches, namely narrative analysis, corpus-based lexical analysis, and multimodal analysis,” said Erlin Estiana Yuanti, the lead researcher. “It not only investigates the verbal content but also how various modes such as visuals, audio, and text work together to convey meaning. This is crucial to understanding the dynamics of digital communication in today’s visual era,” she added.

The researchers found that the tourism industry tends to present personal and emotional stories about family or travel memories, while the technology industry adopts an informative and solution-oriented approach. Meanwhile, the beauty industry frequently emphasizes themes of self-love and personal transformation.

Through the final outcomes of this study, the research team aims to determine whether storytelling strategies vary depending on industry characteristics and to identify both general and industry-specific storytelling patterns.

This research is part of a collaborative initiative between lecturers and students to strengthen applied research competencies in the field of digital communication and public relations in the social media era. The study is expected to contribute to the development of applied linguistics and strategic digital communication, as well as offer practical insights for creative industry practitioners in designing more effective and impactful narrative-based digital content.

SWARA SV UGM: Integrated Aquaponics Innovation for Achieving Technology-Based Food Security in Wukirsari Village

Yogyakarta, July 14, 2025 — Students from Sekolah Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada (SV UGM) have officially launched SWARA (Smart Wukirsari Agrofarming), a strategic initiative to promote community-based food security through an adaptive and applicable integrated technology approach.

SWARA SV UGM adalah program PPK Ormawa yang memadukan inovasi akuaponik modern dan pemberdayaan masyarakat Kalurahan Wukirsari, Bantul.
SWARA SV UGM is an Ormawa PPK program that combines modern aquaponics innovation and community empowerment in Wukirsari Subdistrict, Bantul.

This program is part of the Program Penguatan Kapasitas Organisasi Kemahasiswaan (Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program, or PPK Ormawa), funded by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs under the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Republic of Indonesia (KEMDIKTISAINTEK). Through SWARA, SV UGM students implement a modern integrated farming model based on aquaponics, combining fish farming and crop cultivation in a single, sustainable ecosystem.

The key innovations in this program include the application of sensor technology for automatic water quality monitoring, technical training in aquaponics farming and post-harvest processing, and community mentoring to develop economically viable agricultural enterprises. The program focuses on empowering women from the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) group in Wukirsari Village, Imogiri Subdistrict, Bantul Regency who play a central role in household food security and serve as agents of social transformation at the village level.

Running from July to November 2025, the program integrates not only food production but also education, environmental sustainability, and local economic empowerment. The aquaponics learning center established during the program serves as an open community hub. In parallel, hands-on training in harvesting, post-harvest processing, and organic waste composting encourages the adoption of environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

In addition, the student team initiated the development of an aquaponics starter pack, produced and marketed by local residents. This innovation aims to create new entrepreneurship opportunities based on modern agriculture and foster an entrepreneurial spirit within the village community. The establishment of this community-based agribusiness marks the first step toward building an independent and sustainable agricultural value chain.

SWARA is implemented by a team of 15 students from various majors at SV UGM, all of whom were selected through a competitive process from university to national level. With strong support from faculty advisors and student organizations, the team successfully secured official funding from the Ministry, in recognition of the relevance and impact of their innovative proposal.

By combining appropriate technology with active community participation, SWARA is expected to become a real-life model of how collaboration between students and local residents can bring about sustainable positive change. This program is not merely a short-term initiative but serves as a prototype for a replicable village innovation model that can be applied in other regions with similar potential.

“We believe that change begins with small steps, taken with sincerity by people who care. From the village we move, with the community we grow, and for Indonesia we take our stride,” said a representative from the SWARA SV UGM team.

Dr. Wiryanta shared that, in general, around 70 to 80 percent of SV UGM’s funding still comes from student tuition fees. However, several efforts have been made to develop alternative sources of income, particularly through grants and partnerships. “We fully welcome grant opportunities. In addition to supporting operations, grants also enhance the image of the successful products we produce. We also utilize our laboratories as testing sites and production centers that can be monetized through various activities,” he explained.

Adding to this, Dr. Faiz Zamzami, S.E., M.Acc., QIA., Manager of the Cooperation, Training, and Career Development Unit, explained that as part of a State University with Legal Entity (PTN-BH), SV UGM has the flexibility to manage its finances independently. Therefore, long-term strategies are needed to create new revenue streams. “Our income-generating activities are based on several pillars, including training programs, contractual services, laboratory services, asset utilization, and profit-sharing-based partnerships,” he stated.

This meeting not only strengthened synergy between vocational institutions but also demonstrated a shared commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SV UGM and FV UM reaffirmed the importance of collaboration in developing adaptive, innovative, and sustainable vocational education models, while also enhancing institutional capacity through productive and financially independent business units.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both institutions expressed hopes for mutual learning, the exchange of best practices, and the establishment of long-term collaboration to advance the quality of vocational education in Indonesia—education that excels academically and sustains itself financially.
