Supporting Building Verticality Research, CoE SAGEBIM Sekolah Vokasi UGM Utilizes 3D Scanning Technology

Sleman July 28th 2026 – The Center of Excellence (CoE) for Smart and Green Building Information (SAGEBIM) at the School of Applied Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SV UGM) is solidifying its position as a hub for digital construction solutions. By leveraging cutting-edge Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) technology, CoE SAGEBIM is showcasing its capacity to provide high-precision 3D scanning services for as-built building evaluation, a vital instrument for audit, maintenance, and modern infrastructure management.

Field data acquisition process using the Leica RTC360 scanner to accurately capture the building’s point cloud data

This technical expertise was recently demonstrated during a field data acquisition project at the Bank BRI Adisucipto Branch building on July 28, 2026. In a collaborative research effort with the Department of Earth Technology, CoE SAGEBIM utilized the Leica RTC360 Terrestrial Laser Scanner to comprehensively map the building’s physical state. The resulting high-resolution point cloud data serves as an accurate foundation for experts to conduct geometric building analysis, verify physical conditions against technical documentation, and detect any existing deviations.

The data acquisition process was led by terrestrial survey expert Ir. Hanif Ilmawan, S.T., M.Eng. IPP., and supported by a team of students from the Diploma in Survey and Basic Mapping Technology program, Department of Earth Technology, School of Applied Sciences UGM, including Muhammad Iqbal Ariq, Pawana Abdurrahman, and Setia Rizki Wibowo. Following the field work, the registration and filtering of the point cloud data were meticulously performed using Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS software at the CoE’s facility, located in the Teaching Industry Learning Center (TILC) building at the School of Applied Sciences of UGM.

This achievement underscores that CoE SAGEBIM acts not only as an academic entity but also as a strategic industrial partner capable of providing advanced technical services for audit and digital documentation needs. By bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world industrial demands, the CoE continues to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Specifically, this initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the enhancement of student competencies, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by applying innovative mapping and construction technology, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by supporting digital documentation for smart and sustainable infrastructure.
